Pupils were lucky enough to be visited by two members of staff from Nationwide Building Society. They delivered Money-Go-Round sessions which our pupils loved. The sessions were highly interactive and explained so many aspects of home finances. Children were amazed to learn about the average cost of running a home and many shared their disbelief at how many bills their parents are likely to have to pay each month. The ladies from Nationwide also promoted a discussion about the average salaries in a range of career choices; the wage of a professional footballer was incredibly appealing to all!
Children in Year 6 were visited by Ben Cole and Sarah Williams from Bedazzle on Children's Mental Health Day and lead a ‘Coat of Arms’ workshop. The children’s work during this activity was remarkable, and the discussions were outstanding. They were able to speak confidently about the meaning behind the symbols and colours on their shields, explaining how their strengths and values were helping them to ‘know themselves’ and continue to ‘grow themselves.
We marked Black History Month through our recent Enrichment Day. When discussing this crucial topic, pupils impressed their teachers with their in-depth understanding of the theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’. Pupils were able to recall some of the influential individuals from history who paved the way for equality. Through a whole school assembly and during whole class time, we shared stories from history and children produced some brilliant creative pieces to display around school.
Pupils in Year 6 have really engaged with their World War II theme this half term. Through History lessons, they have focused on the beginning of the war and how Britain prepared for the declaration. This was brought to life by a visit from Portals to the Past. We were visited by historian Lauren Worral, who created a fantastic interactive day for the children. They underwent Air Raid Precaution training (we had to watch out for the air raid siren – everyone to the shelters); explored what would have been in an evacuee’s suitcase; were horrified by the idea of rationing; and finally, we experienced how much fun could still be had in wartime Britain, with dancing and a sing-along.
All pupils in Year 6 spent an afternoon at Ellowes Hall Sports College, where they worked with Mrs Stobbart, Head of Year 7 & Subject Lead for Food Preparation & Nutrition, to discuss wartime recipes and rationing before baking scones. They followed a World War Two recipe and enjoyed using the brilliant facilities in Ellowes Hall’s specialist Food classrooms to bake fruit scones. Every child took one scone home to enjoy after school.
