Florence Nightingale
We are having so much fun learning about Florence Nightingale and finding out why she is so significant. We have learnt about why she wanted to become a nurse, why she went to the Crimean War, what the conditions were like when she arrived and how she has changed the nursing profession. We even drew our own portraits of Florence Nightingale.
DT project - puppets
Our DT topic this term was puppets. We firstly looked and evaluated different puppets before designing our own ones. Alongside this we practised our running and cross stitch that we would need to sew our puppets together with. We loved creating our puppets and had a great time as we invited our grown ups to come along and help. Here are some of our finished puppets!
Drama workshop
Year 2 were kindly invited to take part in a drama workshop by the company 'The Performance Hub'. We had a great time as our focus was 'clowning'. The lady helped us to bring out our personalities and we definitely did a lot of laughing.
British Science Week
This year the focus was 'change and adapt'. We decided to conduct an experiment to find out if different liquids will freeze. We poured water, milk, orange juice, oil, honey, vinegar and washing up liquid into an ice-cube tray and put it in the freezer for 24 hours. We made our predictions and were surprised by what we found out!
World Book Week
To celebrate World Book Day we focused on ‘Being Unique’. We looked at a range of books including: Incredible You, What Makes Me a Me and Only One You. We created some fantastic poems and looked closely at different vocabulary used within the books. We also linked our maths work on Statistics to World Book Week finding out about our favourite books we have read in year 2 so far. To finish our week off we made some lovely artwork, colouring our own fish to show how we are all unique and can make a difference.
Our Trip to Gornal Library
We had a wonderful trip to Gornal Library. It was a long and tiring walk to the library but we had a great time completing our field work for geography. While we were at the library, they spoke to us about what happens in a library and what they offer. We were amazed with some of the facts they told us. We then got the opportunity to choose a book to borrow.
James Rizzi Artwork
Our artist for this half term was James Rizzi. We found out that he focuses on pop art and city buildings. We loved creating a piece of artwork in the style of his work before painting them. We then created another piece of artwork in his style by using clay.
Geography - What can I find out about the world's continents and oceans?
This half term, we focused on answering our enquiry question. We loved locating the seven continents and five oceans on our world map. We even learnt some songs to help us remember them!
The Great Milking Bank Sewing Bee
Today, we used our sewing skills to create our own Christmas stockings. We used the ‘whip’ stitch to put our stocking together and then had great fun decorating them. It definitely got us in the mood for Christmas!
Great Fire of London
We are really enjoying learning about the Great Fire of London and had great fun using marbling ink to create our own silhouette of London.
Think Tank Trip
We had a great time at the Think Tank Birmingham. We went into a Space workshop to learn about how astronauts go into space and the team that help them. We tried on a space suit and worked out which materials would be suitable for it. After our workshop we explored the museum and found out facts about our world. We especially enjoyed playing in Mini Brum and the Science Garden!
Peter Thorpe
In year 2, we have been learning about Peter Thorpe. We practised drawing planets first before creating our final piece. We are so pleased with how they have turned out!
